Monday, 1/23- Figurative Language
Idiom
A phrase or expression that means something different than its literal meaning (word for word)
Metaphor
A figure of speech that is used to make a comparison between two people, things, animals, or places, usually using “is” or “was.”
Examples:
“Life is a box of chocolates.”
“My bedroom is a war zone.”
“She was a pig at dinner.”
Simile
A figure of speech that makes a comparison using “like” or “as” showing similarities between two totally different things.
Examples:
“My brother is as blind as a bat.”
“She eats like a pig!”
Hyperbole
An exaggeration which may be used for emphasis and humor
Examples:
“I’m so hungry I could eat a horse.”
“My mom is going to kill me.”
“I haven’t seen you in a million years!”
Personification
A figure of speech in which a thing, an idea or an animal is given human qualities.
Examples:
“When I didn’t make the team, my dream of being an NFL star died.”
“Time flies when you’re having fun.”
Alliteration
Happens when words that start with the same sound are used close together in a phrase or sentence.
Examples:
“Come here and clean your closet.”
“Sheep should sleep in a shed.”
Onomatopoeia
A word that imitates the sound of that word.
Examples:
“The buzzing bee flew away.”
“Don’t honk your horn at me!”
“Shh! No talking in the library.”
Allusion
An allusion is a figure of speech that makes a reference to a “famous” place, person, or something that happened.
Examples:
“Mr. B is a real Grinch during Christmas.”
“To sleep in or not sleep in, that is the question.”
